Cost of SIV

• One hog production company found the estimated cost of swine influenza virus (SIV) to be $10.31 per market pig¹
• SIV is one of the top three respiratory health challenges in terms of productivity losses and frequency of appearance²
• Survey of 19 herds³ (50 percent of U.S. pork production in fall of 2005 and winter of 2006) indicate:
• In breeding herds – SIV is a primary health challenge in 18 of 19 herds
• In nursery – SIV is third to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) and Haemophilus parasuis
• In finisher – SIV is second to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae
• Utilize appropriate vaccines to control SIV and reduce economic impact
